Her art practice explores both her own relationship with nature and the wider relationship
between man and nature. She creates work which reflects a personal response to nature in both man-
made and natural settings. Her focus is drawn to a specific element or place she feels compelled to
share, the rest becomes obsolete - a mental process of selection and omission; a hierarchy of significance.
Sam was drawn to Woolf’s references to nature, how her characters connect to nature, transcending
ordinary life when in the landscape. These feelings, internal commentaries, have little bearing on the
direction of the lives of Woolf’s characters and echoes an ongoing concern within Sam’s work; feeling
connected to nature but living a life which separates her from it. Sam references Woolf’s novels, The
Years, To the Lighthouse and The Waves within this exhibition.
