Venetia Nevill
Venetia creates sensory and experiential work to express an intuitive, visceral connection with the world. Tapping into the felt and unseen, she is inspired by the cyclical rhythms of nature and her creativity is a homage to this elemental connection. The ecologically informed artworks focus on transformation and reclamation - creation often emerges through destruction and dead matter can be transmuted.
She is particularly drawn to Woolf’s love of nature and deep connection with what she called 'moments of being’; flashes of awareness when an individual is fully conscious of her experience, which reveal a connection to a larger pattern behind the 'cotton wool' of daily life (non being). She says this new form of reality is inherent in nature " I see something before me, something abstract, but residing in the downs or sky, besides which nothing matters, in which I shall rest and continue to exist - reality I call it”.
While Woolf connected to these patterns through her writing, Venetia’s process involves meditative performance, healing and alchemy as a path to honour the self through a connection to the natural world. As Woolf says ‘the whole world is a work of art...we are the words, we are the music, we are the thing itself’
